The Kano State Government has donated 10 brand new motorcycles to forest rangers stationed at the Falgore Game Reserve to strengthen conservation efforts and biodiversity protection.
The motorcycles were presented on behalf of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf by Conservator Sadiq Kura Mohammed, Managing Director of the Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA), during an event to mark World Rangers Day at the Falgore Base Camp in Doguwa Local Government Area.
Mohammed said the donation reflected government’s commitment to protecting the ecosystem, which harbors diverse species of flora and fauna.
“Today, KAZOWMA proudly joins the global conservation community in celebrating World Rangers Day, a day dedicated to honoring the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of rangers working on the frontlines of wildlife protection,” he said.
He commended the rangers for their roles in curbing tree felling, combating poaching, monitoring endangered species and supporting local communities.
“Our rangers are the backbone of our conservation efforts. Their efforts are critical to safeguarding the planet’s natural heritage,” he added.
Also speaking, Hajiya Hafsat Bello, Director of Zoo Services at KAZOWMA, said the day was set aside globally to recognize the sacrifices of rangers who work under challenging conditions to protect nature.
“World Rangers Day is a moment to celebrate the tireless efforts of men and women who protect wildlife, preserve ecosystems and ensure that future generations inherit a planet rich in biodiversity,” she said.
In his remarks, the District Head of Doguwa, Alhaji Sarki Muhammad Dankadai, commended the government for supporting the rangers, describing the Falgore Game Reserve as vital to Kano residents as it feeds River Kano, supplies Tiga Dam and serves as a major carbon sink.
Speaking on behalf of the rangers, Hisham Sulaiman Aliyu, Second-in-Command at the reserve, expressed appreciation to KAZOWMA for prioritizing their welfare and safety.
He said the rangers’ work had led to a reduction in indiscriminate tree felling, poaching and had promoted habitat restoration.
“Rangers are guardians of nature, and they deserve our utmost respect and support. Let’s stand with them—not just today, but every day,” he said.
This year’s World Rangers Day is themed “Rangers: Powering Transformative Conservation.”
