Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, over his withdrawal from Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade in Kano on Wednesday.
Kabir-Yusuf made the call while addressing participants at the Independence anniversary celebration held at Sani Abacha Stadium.
He described the action of the Commissioner, who pulled out with his personnel at the last minute, as partisan, unethical and disloyal to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, and on behalf of the government and people of Kano, we are not happy with this attitude.
“Today, Nigerians are happy to celebrate the independence of our country in peace and unity, but the Commissioner of Police decided to withdraw from the parade for reasons best known to him.
“This conduct is partisan, unethical, and unbecoming of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force. I therefore call on Mr President to remove him from his position,” the governor said.
Kabir-Yusuf stressed that the decision amounted to disrespect to the people of Kano, who are peace-loving and law-abiding.
He added that his administration would forward a formal petition to the Federal Government and relevant security authorities to press its demand.
The governor, however, commended other security agencies for their participation in the parade, noting that their presence ensured a peaceful and colourful event.
When contacted the Commissioner of Police promised to call back later.
The Independence Day parade in Kano featured the military, paramilitary organisations, schools, voluntary groups and other stakeholders.
