The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reiterated its warning against the persistent unlawful activities of some masquerades across the state.
This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Uyo by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, expressed concern over the increasing use of masquerade festivals as a cover for criminal acts despite an earlier warning issued on Sept. 18.
The Commissioner noted that some masquerades, instead of promoting cultural heritage, had resorted to acts of violence, intimidation, extortion, and other criminal behaviours, in violation of the Akwa Ibom State Masquerades (Control) Law, Cap. 94, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022.
The statement said that intelligence reports revealed that some masquerades had continued to engage in illegal processions, assaulting innocent citizens, causing injuries, and forcefully demanding money without due approval from relevant authorities.
It added that such acts constituted serious breaches of public peace and disregard for lawful order.
The Command reaffirmed that no masquerade, group, or individual should organize or participate in any public outing or procession without first obtaining a permit from the Commissioner of Police as required by law.
“All village heads, community heads, and organizers of masquerade activities are reminded of their legal responsibility to ensure full compliance,” the statement said.
It further listed the following as offences under the Masquerades Control Law: unauthorized public outings without police approval, straying from designated routes, intimidation or assault of citizens, breaking into homes, and using masquerade costumes as disguise for criminal activities such as extortion and drug peddling.
The Command warned that any masquerade, sponsor, or organizer found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted, adding that surveillance had been intensified to apprehend offenders.
While emphasizing the need to preserve the cultural values of Akwa Ibom people, CP Azare cautioned that cultural celebrations must not degenerate into criminality.
He assured residents of continuous police protection and urged community leaders, traditional rulers, and the public to report any unlawful masquerade activities to the nearest police station.
The Command appreciated the cooperation of citizens and stakeholders in maintaining peace and order in the state.
