The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has warned that sudden political loyalty and last-minute adoption of popular slogans ahead of the 2027 elections will not translate into automatic tickets or political relevance in Rivers State.
Wike issued the warning on Monday while addressing residents and political stakeholders during his thank-you visit to Omuma Local Government Area, insisting that political power is earned through credibility, consistency and trust not opportunism.
“Power is not given freely. Politics is not a gift. Mandates are earned, defended and protected. Nobody dashes power,” Wike declared.
He made it clear that his visit was not politically motivated but aimed solely at appreciating the people for standing with him through difficult times.
“I did not come here to play politics. I came here for one clear reason: to say thank you,” Wike said, noting that it would have been wrong to allow the year to end without personally expressing his gratitude.
The former Rivers State governor recalled the intense political climate ahead of the 2023 presidential election, stressing that his stance at the time was driven by principles, not party loyalty.
“It was not about party politics. It was about equity, fairness and justice. Nigeria belongs to all of us. No Nigerian is a second-class citizen,” he said.
According to Wike, equity demanded that the presidency return to the South, a position he said he stood by despite pressure and threats.
He pointed to the election results in Rivers State as evidence of political strength and grassroots support.
“The President won the presidential election. But in the Senate, House of Representatives, State Assembly and governorship, PDP prevailed. That tells you our capacity and our ability to mobilise and deliver when it matters,” he stated.
Wike announced that active political engagements would resume fully from January, urging supporters and stakeholders to prepare.
“From January, politics begins. Be prepared. This is not a threat; it is a strategic reality,” he said.
He also declared total alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing clarity in his political position.
“Whatever the President says, know that is exactly where I stand. There is alignment. There is no ambiguity,” Wike affirmed.
The FCT Minister emphasised the importance of integrity and trust in leadership, warning against ungratefulness and dishonesty.
“Agreements matter, whether written or verbal. Trust is everything. No amount of money should make anyone abandon integrity,” he said.
Wike added that difficult times reveal true loyalty, cautioning against individuals who only associate with power when benefits are guaranteed.
“Hard times expose character. You know who stands firm and who only shows up when food is ready,” he noted.
Concluding his remarks, Wike reminded the people that political choices come with responsibility, reiterating that mandates must be earned.
“If you choose one direction or another, that is your decision. But understand this clearly power is not for dash,” he said.
He thanked the people of Omuma for their support and assured them that he would return to engage them further in the future.
