The Kano State Government has constructed 15 toilet facilities and renovated the kitchen at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre as part of efforts to improve the welfare and health conditions of inmates.
This is contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Kano by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa.
The statement said the intervention was approved by Gov. Abba Yusuf following engagements between the NCoS and relevant stakeholders.
Lawan-Kofarnasarawa quoted the Kano Commissioner for Rural Development, Dr Abdulkadir Abdussalam, as saying that the initiative reflected the Governor’s commitment to fulfilling his promise of improving living conditions in custodial facilities.
He stated that access to adequate sanitation and a hygienic kitchen environment was critical to safeguarding inmates’ health and supporting effective correctional administration.
Abdulsalam pledged continued collaboration with the NCoS to improve public health and the welfare of inmates across custodial centres in the state.
In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Yusuf Ahmed-Lakpene, commended the state government for its continued support to the Service.
He said improved sanitation facilities were essential for effective correction, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
Ahmed-Lakpene called on other stakeholders to emulate the gesture of Gov Kabir-Yusuf stressing that a whole-of-society approach to corrections would contribute to a safer and healthier society.
The event was attended by senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Internal Security, retired AVM Ibrahim Umar and the Director-General of Special Services, retired Maj.-Gen. Sani Mohammed, among others.(NAN)
