The Gombe State Government has established a high-level task force to tackle the misuse, abuse and theft of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and other nutrition commodities meant for children.
The task force was inaugurated by the Deputy Governor, Manasseh Jatau, who said the move demonstrates the state’s firm commitment to protecting vulnerable children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition.
Manassah Jatau described the initiative as a reflection of strong political will and institutional resolve to safeguard life-saving treatment.
He explained that the committee comprises security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and development partners working under the leadership of the state government.
According to the Deputy Governor , the task force will promote transparency, accountability and community ownership of nutrition programmes across the state.
Also speaking, Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhaq Rafique, said UNICEF supports the initiative, noting that it comes at a time when malnutrition rates are rising.
She expressed concern that despite huge investments in nutrition supplies, many malnourished children are yet to receive the commodities.
Dr. Nuzhat Rafique stressed that RUTF is a life-saving product that must reach the intended beneficiaries and expressed optimism that the task force would strengthen awareness, prevent diversion and ultimately save lives.
