ASUU Declares Indefinite strike in Taraba

By Andrew Ojih,  Jalingo.
Following the inability of Taraba state government to met the demands of lecturers at the Taraba state University,  the Taraba state chapter of the Academic Union Staff of Universities (ASUU) on Monday declared Indefinite strike action.
The ASUU-TSU Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave while announcing the strike action said the state government failed to implement an agreed remuneration package and clear outstanding salary arrears.
The strike action followed months of negotiations between the union and the state government over the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement.
He accused the government of delaying action on the union’s demands despite the completion of a verification exercise established to facilitate implementation.
The union is demanding the immediate implementation of the agreed remuneration structure and the payment of all salary arrears accumulated from January 2026 to date.
He highlighted that the decision to withdraw academic services was taken after the union exhausted available opportunities for dialogue without securing the government’s commitment to implement the agreement.
He informed that engagements with the state government began in February 2026 and resulted in the constitution of a verification committee to examine the existing salary structure and assess the level of implementation across the North-East.
According to him, the committee completed its assignment and submitted its report on September 24, 2026.
He stressed that ASUU-TSU had earlier suspended its planned strike after the government, through the Office of the Head of Civil Service, requested additional time to address the issues.
