The Nigeria Police have released Kano-based journalist Ibrahim Dan’uwa Rano following widespread condemnation from the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Amnesty International, and other civil society organizations.
Rano, who was arrested and detained at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano over allegations of defamation, was described by rights groups as a victim of unlawful and unconstitutional arrest aimed at silencing the media.
CITAD and Amnesty International had earlier demanded his immediate and unconditional release, warning that the action violated press freedom and Nigeria’s Constitution.
