The Mumuye Community of Yorro Local Government Area in Taraba State, Northeast Nigeria, have celebrated their annual Yam Festival, known locally as Santii, in a colourful display of tradition and cultural pride.
The event, held in Pantisawa, the headquarters of Yorro Local Government, drew tourists and guests from within and outside the state.
The festival, usually observed during the yam harvest season, is a symbolic occasion that celebrates unity, thanksgiving, and the traditional significance of yam in Mumuye culture.
Leading the celebration, the Chief of Mumuye, Ado Adamu Mazang, performed the traditional rites of cutting and eating roasted yam to mark the beginning of the festival.
He described the Yam Festival as a unifying cultural event that strengthens community bonds and preserves the people’s identity.
“We must continue to promote our culture and share the beauty of our Yam Festival with the outside world,” the traditional ruler said.
Former Governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, who holds the traditional title of Dabang Yorro, commended the Chief of Mumuye for sustaining the festival, urging him to uphold unity and harmony among the people.
Also speaking, the Dan Ruwaiton Mumuye, Dr. Ahmed Kayya, praised the Chief of Mumuye for his leadership and commitment to preserving the community’s traditions, calling for continuous support for the festival.
He also commended the cordial relationship between the Fulani Community and the Mumuye people living side by side as brothers and sisters.
The Chairperson of Yorro Local Government, Mrs. Martina Anthony, described the Yam Festival as more than a celebration of harvest but a reflection of the people’s history, respect, and shared values.
“Our culture is the heartbeat of our community. It teaches us gratitude, unity, and resilience,” she said. “When we come together as one, regardless of tribe or religion, we achieve more. Our strength lies in our togetherness.”
She also emphasized the need for collective efforts in promoting peace, security, and cultural preservation across the community.
At the end of the event, winners of the Santii Annual Yam Festival competition Mohammed Mashi, Zubairu Umaru, and Abdulrasheed Adamu received prizes in recognition of their participation and excellence.
