The Kano State Police Command says it arrested 107 suspects for various crimes in August under “Operation Kukan Kura,” a special initiative aimed at reclaiming public spaces and reducing criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano.
Bakori said the operation, launched on July 1, 2025, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, was designed to incorporate both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies with emphasis on community-centered policing.
According to him, the operation has significantly reduced thuggery-related crimes (popularly called Fadan Daba) across the state, with residents serving as active stakeholders by volunteering useful information to security agencies.
He gave a breakdown of the arrests to include: eight suspected armed robbers, eight suspected kidnappers, three human trafficking suspects, 14 suspected drug dealers, two motor vehicle thieves, six motorcycle thieves, five suspected thieves, and 61 suspected thugs.
The commissioner said one human trafficking victim was rescued, while a number of recoveries were made.
Recovered items, he said, included one AK-47 rifle, seven fabricated guns, 11 live ammunition, seven motor vehicles, eight motorcycles, seven cows, 102 cutlasses, 74 knives, and a large cache of illicit drugs.
The drugs comprised 111 parcels and 458 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa, 211 pieces of suspected rubber solutions, 257 bottles of “suck and die,” five packets and 21 pieces of suspected Exol tablets, and 20 sachets and 13 pieces of suspected diazepam tablets.
Other items recovered include 44 dealers of Kampala textile materials, 59 mobile phones, three POS machines, 17 Opay instant debit cards, and three MP3 players.
Bakori added that since the launch of “Operation Kukan Kura” on July 1, 2025, the command had recovered a total of 473 dangerous weapons and a large quantity of illicit drugs.
He commended officers of the command for their commitment and sacrifice, assuring that the police would continue to refine strategies, leverage community partnership and technology, and strengthen operations to tackle emerging security challenges.
The commissioner also appreciated the media and law-abiding residents for their vigilance and cooperation, which, he said, had amplified the capacity of the police to safeguard lives and property in the state.
He urged members of the public to continue supporting the police by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest station or through the command’s emergency numbers.
