The Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Barau Jibrin, has commended the Federal University of Science and Technology (FUST), Kabo, Kano State, for securing accreditation for 20 academic programmes ahead of its maiden academic session.
Barau gave the commendation when the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council, Chief (Mrs) Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, led members of the council on a courtesy visit to him at the National Assembly, Abuja, on Thursday.
Laoye-Tomori, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, said the accreditation, which included medical programmes, was a significant milestone that positioned the institution for the commencement of academic activities.
She attributed the achievement to the support and contributions of Barau, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, particularly his role in the establishment and conversion of the institution from a polytechnic to a university.
She recalled that Barau sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, in 2016 and later facilitated its conversion into a university in 2025.
She expressed appreciation to the senator on behalf of the governing council, management, staff and students for his contributions to the development of the institution.
Responding, Barau congratulated the governing council, management and staff on the achievement, urging them to sustain the progress and maintain high standards of academic excellence.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for signing the bill that facilitated the conversion of the institution into a university.
Barau reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the institution, stressing the importance of providing Nigerian youths with quality education and relevant skills for national development.
“Our greatest asset as a nation is our human resources, particularly the youth. We must ensure they have access to quality education and the necessary skills to drive national development,” he said.
The accreditation of the 20 programmes is expected to strengthen the institution’s readiness to commence academic activities.
