The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has debunked reports alleging the removal of the Governing Council chairman.
The Chairman of the union, Alhaji Ado Muhammed, made this known during an emergency congress meeting with academic staff, saying the recent controversy surrounding misinformation circulated on social media was untrue.
The institution, formerly a Federal College of Education, has been upgraded to a university and is currently undergoing a transition.
According to him, “We convened an emergency meeting due to disturbing reports circulating online.
“Some individuals falsely claimed to represent the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and even submitted a petition to the Federal Ministry of Education,” he said.
Muhammed further explained that there is no recognised ASUU body currently operating in the university.
He added that the entire academic union structure remains under COEASU, pending the full transition to university status.
“Those individuals claiming to represent ASUU have no legitimacy within this university. They neither followed due process nor held any congress.
“Their so-called union leadership was self-appointed, which violates the principles of trade unionism,” he said.
The chairman said a legitimate congress meeting was held, with all academic staff in attendance, where a collective resolution was made to distance the union from the false petition.
“COEASU remains the only recognised academic union here, and whatever decision the Federal Government makes during this transition, we are ready to comply with it,” he added.
He also acknowledged the leadership of the Governing Council chairman, Prof. Ahmad Adamu, who was deployed by the Federal Ministry of Education and later appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University.
Muhammed disclosed that the union would counter the petition submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education.
