Participants at the 6th Kano Social Influencers Summit(KANSIS) have called for the responsible and ethical deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to curb corruption and promote transparency in governance.
The call was made on Wednesday during the Summit organised by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) at Khalifa Isyaku Rabi’u University (KHAIRUN), Kano.
The two-day summit, with the theme: “Towards a More Inclusive Governance of AI,” brought together stakeholders from academia, civil society, regulatory bodies, and the general public to discuss how AI can be harnessed for national development.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of CITAD and pioneer Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), His Royal Highness, Eze Ogbonna-Ironmantu, represented by Chief Nmezi Oguadinma, noted that AI adoption is rapidly growing in Nigeria.
He called for practical discussions on using AI to reduce corruption and inefficiency in public institutions.
Also speaking, the National Data Protection Board representative, Mr Abdulmalik Jamo, warned that unregulated AI could threaten privacy, urging strong governance frameworks and privacy-by-design policies.
Jamo stressed the importance of strong governance frameworks, privacy-by-design policies, stakeholder engagement, and effective regulation to ensure that AI serves the public good without infringing on individual rights
Dr Bala Muhammad of Bayero University Kano, in a paper titled “Disinformation, Deepfake, and AI: Implications for Media and the Public,cautioned against AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes, advocating media literacy and public awareness as safeguards.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi-Waiyya, warned against the abuse of social media freedoms, noting that AI is enhancing human capacity through technological innovation.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to embracing digital transformation to drive socio-economic growth.
The summit featured plenary sessions chaired by Prof. Tunde Akanni and Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, focusing on ethics and inclusivity in AI deployment.
Participants resolved to promote transparency, accountability, and responsible AI use for national development.
