“Farmers Voice NG”, a newspaper focused on agriculture, has unveiled its first print edition in Kano State.
Speaking at the event, Editor Buhari Abba stressed the importance of agriculture to national development.
“Agriculture is too important to be ignored,” he said, noting that the newspaper aims to reflect the experiences of rural farmers, alongside expert insights and policy discussions.
Abba pointed out that agricultural reporting in Nigeria should go beyond problems. “These are also stories of survival—of youths returning to farms, women forming cooperatives, and communities pushing through droughts, insecurity, and poor infrastructure to feed the nation,” he said.
“This print edition is just the beginning. We envision a future where “Farmers Voice NG” becomes a reference point, not just in Kano or Nigeria, but across Africa,” he added.
He explained that “Farmers Voice NG” began as a digital platform on April 14, 2023, with the goal of focusing on agriculture, livestock, food systems, and the people behind them.
“In a media landscape dominated by politics, scandal, and noise, we chose to listen to the earth—listen to the smallholder farmer, the herder in transit, the agro-innovator, the rural woman who grows food but is rarely heard,” Abba said.
He described the publication as a way to reflect the realities of food systems through stories of resilience and innovation.
Malam Mustapha Muhammad, Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Government, said the unveiling marked a step toward addressing agricultural challenges.
“This initiative gives a voice to poor farmers and serves as a communication bridge during a time when we are battling climate change and food insecurity,” he said.
“It will help disseminate best agricultural practices to farmers across Nigeria and beyond.”
Dr. Bashir Barau, Deputy Provost of the Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology, Kano, said the publication could help inform farmers about current innovations and trends in the agricultural sector.
