The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has honored the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for their commitment and consistent reportage of FRSC activities, as well as its role in creating awareness about road safety.
The Corps also recognised the contributions of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano State Council and other stakeholders for their efforts in promoting safer roads, thereby reducing road crashes to the barest minimum.
Other organisations recognized by the Corps include the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and a philanthropist, Alhaji Sani Kwangila Yakasai (SKY), among others.
Speaking on Saturday during the 2024 end-of-the-year award night, the Sector Commander of FRSC RS1.2 Kano, Umar Matazu, stated that it was the first such event held in Kano.
Matazu presented the award to NAN in recognition of its commitment and sacrifices in covering FRSC activities and creating public awareness about safer roads.
He noted that the awardees had demonstrated professionalism in their duties by reporting FRSC activities objectively.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety in Nigeria through significant investments in infrastructure development, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
According to Matazu, the government has made substantial progress in reducing road crashes and protecting the lives of citizens, aligning with its broader goal of ensuring public safety and well-being.
He acknowledged that the FRSC Corps Marshal and his team had been working assiduously to curb reckless driving practices and promote a culture of road safety among Nigerians.
The sector commander emphasized that the awards were a recognition of the media’s outstanding contributions to FRSC’s growth, particularly NAN’s consistent efforts in projecting the Corps’ activities in Nigeria over the years.
He highlighted the crucial role of the media in national development, describing its impact as immeasurable.
“The award recognizes NAN’s efforts in educating, informing, and sensitizing the public on road safety ethics through its timely and accurate reporting,” Matazu stated.
“I want to say thank you to NAN. You have been accommodating us, and we really appreciate it,” he added.
Matazu also commended FRSC staff for their dedication and tireless efforts in making Nigerian roads safer.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support, particularly in approving funds for the Corps’ patrol operations.
He noted that the President’s support had been instrumental in enabling the FRSC to effectively discharge its mandate.
The sector commander further praised the dedication and selfless service of FRSC personnel, acknowledging their year-round efforts to ensure free-flowing traffic and reduce road crashes.
He described the officers as the backbone of the Corps, noting that their commitment to duty had been exemplary.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards and certificates to the recipients.
Outstanding FRSC staff members were also recognized for their exceptional performance and contributions to the Corps.
According to Matazu, public education on road safety in Kano State has led to greater compliance with traffic rules.
“This award recognizes achievements, milestones, excellence, and selfless service, as well as the collective efforts of stakeholders in promoting road safety and reducing fatalities on our roads,” he said.
He urged all stakeholders to continue raising awareness and encouraged others to remain dedicated to their duties.
