The Kebbi Progressive Youths (KEPYO) has condemned the destruction of campaign billboards and posters belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in parts of Kebbi State, describing the development as an unfortunate threat to peaceful political engagement.
The group’s position follows reports of the vandalisation of APC campaign materials in Argungu and Birnin Kebbi, allegedly by some supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Comrade Hamisu Sani, KEPYO described the destruction as an act of political intolerance that undermines democratic values and the right of political parties to freely express themselves and canvass for public support.
The group maintained that political competition should be driven by ideas, programmes and constructive engagement rather than intimidation, vandalism or acts capable of creating unnecessary tension among supporters of different political parties.
KEPYO stressed that the freedom to display campaign materials and communicate political messages is a legitimate component of democratic participation, which must be respected irrespective of party affiliation.
It consequently called on political leaders, particularly those in the ADC, to caution their supporters against actions capable of escalating political tensions in the state.
The group also urged security agencies to investigate the incidents and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
While calling on APC supporters to remain calm and resist any temptation to retaliate, KEPYO emphasised that political differences should not be allowed to threaten the prevailing peace and harmonious coexistence in Kebbi State.
It reaffirmed the need for political maturity, mutual respect and tolerance as stakeholders prepare for another electoral contest, noting that democracy thrives where opposing political interests can coexist without fear or intimidation.
