The Kano State Government has announced plans to transform Radio Kano into a training hub for journalists and enhance its operations.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made this known during a familiarization visit to the station.
Describing Radio Kano as one of the oldest radio stations in Nigeria with untapped potential, Comrade Waiya stated, “We are determined to equip Radio Kano to become a center of excellence for training journalists. This will not only boost the quality of media practice but also create opportunities for young people in the state,” he said.
The Commissioner disclosed plans to initiate capacity-building programs for public and private media organizations and urged the station’s management to prioritize staff welfare, particularly for junior workers.
“The establishment of a cooperative society for staff members will go a long way in enhancing their welfare, and I assure you of my full support in this regard,” he added.
Comrade Waiya also highlighted the need for partnerships with international media organizations to improve Radio Kano’s programming, attract advertisements, and increase revenue.
In his address, the Managing Director of Radio Kano, Abubakar Adamu Rano, highlighted some of the station’s recent developments, including the payment of six months’ allowances to casual staff, the establishment of a medical center, and the upgrade of its frequency to 13 kilohertz.
He also pointed out major challenges, including unstable power supply. “The lack of a reliable power source is a major hindrance to our operations. We appeal to the government to help restore our retainership with the 44 local government areas in the state,” he said.
