The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Thursday distributed cows and other items to 13 rehabilitation centres in the state.
Other items distributed included foodstuff such as rice, vegetable oil and other ingredients.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gesture was in the spirit of the Maulud Nabiyi celebration.
Speaking during the distribution, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, said the gesture was initiated by Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf to provide succour to patients in the centres and give them a sense of belonging.
Abdullahi-Kubarachi said the gesture was to make them feel valued and catered for by the society.
He urged parents and guardians who have patients or wards in the centres to visit them regularly and take them back home when they were stable.
The executive secretary also called on families to continue to support the patients and facilitate their reintegration into their communities.
The Director in charge of the Rehabilitation Centres in SEMA, Maryam Musa, described the gesture as the first of its kind.
She said the gesture demonstrated government’s concern for the welfare of patients undergoing rehabilitation.
Speaking on behalf of the leaders of the rehabilitation centres, the leader of the Dorayi Rehabilitation Centre, Mannir Dahiru-Kurawa, described the gesture as commendable.
He said the items would go a long way in providing succour to the patients and support the centres in catering for their needs.
