The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, in collaboration with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, has secured the release of an inmate who spent 22 years in custody over a robbery case.
This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the NCoS Kano command’s Public Relations officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan.
He said that the inmate was initially sentenced by an Upper Shari’a Court to the amputation of his right hand and left leg.
Lawan said, “Following sustained legal intervention and an appeal process led by Barr. Asiya Mohammed-Imam of the Legal Aid Council Kano, the court reviewed the case and subsequently discharged and acquitted him.
“The development highlights ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Correctional Service to decongest custodial centres while ensuring inmates have access to justice and fair legal representation.”
According to him, the partnership between the NCoS and the council underscores a shared commitment to due process, equity, and the protection of inmates’ legal rights.
Lawan said while in custody, the inmate actively participated in educational and vocational training programmes aimed at supporting rehabilitation and facilitating reintegration into society.
“Upon his release, he expressed appreciation to the Service for its reform-driven initiatives and enhanced welfare services.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to justice, humane custody, rehabilitation, and effective reintegration in line with global best practices” he said. (NAN)
