The Nigerian Cancer Society, Kano State Chapter, has called on the state government to introduce subsidized cancer care services in all public hospitals.
This appeal was made by the society’s chairman, Salisu Yusuf, during a press conference to mark the 2025 World Cancer Day.
The society urged the government to integrate cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care into its healthcare contributory scheme.
The society maintained that the move would alleviate the financial burden on patients, particularly those from low-income families.
Furthermore, the society requested that cancer patients and survivors be included in the recently launched Abba Care Scheme, which aims to support 300,000 vulnerable individuals.
Yusuf emphasized that cancer remains a significant health crisis requiring immediate attention. Many patients struggle to afford the costs associated with screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
The Nigerian Cancer Society commended the state government’s efforts to improve the healthcare sector and called on philanthropists, corporate organizations, private health institutions, and NGOs to support cancer care initiatives in Kano.
The society reiterated its commitment to advocating for policy changes that prioritize cancer patients in Kano through awareness and early detection programs.
The 2025 World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the importance of collective action in combating cancer.
