The State Commandant of the corps, Mohammed Hassan-Agalama, said the event was part of activities to mark the annual celebration being observed globally on March 1.
He said the day, organised under the auspices of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO), aimed at promoting cooperation among national civil protection agencies and raising public awareness on disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
“Today, we join the global community to commemorate the International Civil Defence Day, a day set aside to recognise the invaluable contributions of civil defence organisations in protecting lives, property and critical national assets,” he said.
Hassan-Agalama said the 2026 theme, “Managing Environmental Risk for a Resilient and Sustainable Future,” was timely in view of the growing environmental challenges facing communities.
According to him, environmental risks such as flooding, desertification, erosion, building collapse and the effects of climate change pose serious threats to human security and sustainable development.
“These challenges demand proactive measures, strong institutions and effective collaboration among stakeholders,” he said.
The commandant said the NSCDC, as a key component of Nigeria’s internal security architecture, remained committed to disaster management, protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, and emergency response.
He added that the command had strengthened its disaster management unit to ensure timely response to emergencies, while intensifying public sensitisation on environmental safety and risk-reduction strategies.
Hassan-Agalama also said the command was enhancing the capacity of its personnel through specialised training, simulation exercises and strategic partnerships with relevant agencies.
“Our collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, environmental authorities and community-based organisations is vital in building a coordinated and sustainable response framework,” he said.
The commandant urged residents to adopt safe environmental practices, including proper waste disposal and avoid illegal construction on waterways and promptly report environmental threats to relevant authorities.
“Environmental risk management is not the sole responsibility of government agencies. It is a collective responsibility of all members of society,” he said.
Hassan-Agalama reiterated the command’s commitment to supporting government policies aimed at environmental sustainability and climate resilience in the state.
He also commended the dedication and professionalism of NSCDC personnel in Kano for their commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
Also speaking, the Deputy Commandant, Boniface Attah, said the day served as a reminder of courage, vigilance and readiness of the civil defence personnel to protecting lives and property.
