A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has elected a 39-member executive committee to manage the party’s affairs in the state.
The faction is led in the state by Mohammed Sani Abacha, whose supporters say he has been providing backing to party members.
The new executive, led by Dr Bello Gambo as chairman, emerged during an election conducted through a consensus arrangement by the party’s National Election Executive Committee.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) supervised the exercise.
Presenting the newly elected officers, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Aminu Abdullahi Taura, a former Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, said the process followed the dissolution of the party’s caretaker committees in the state.
Taura explained that the committee acted on the mandate of the party’s National Central Working Committee to conduct elections for new leadership across the 848 wards, the 44 local government areas and the state office.
“We have the mandate of the National Central Working Committee of our great party to conduct the election through consensus arrangement of new leaders of the party from the 848 wards and 44 local government areas, plus the state office, and we have concluded everything peacefully without rancour,” he said.
In his remarks, the party’s National Youth Leader, Bello Ibrahim Aboki, said efforts were ongoing to strengthen unity within the party in Kano.
According to him, the faction associated with Kabiru Tanimu Turaki had agreed to improve relations with the party to support its progress.
Aboki also said attempts were being made to bring prominent political figures, including former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Aminu Wali, into the new leadership fold.
He said although the two politicians had not yet joined the faction, many of their supporters were aligning with the group.
Aboki further described Mohammed Sani Abacha as the leader of the faction in the state, noting that he had been supportive of party members.
In his acceptance speech, Gambo pledged to run an inclusive administration and promote reconciliation within the party.
He said the party would work towards rebuilding its structures and strengthening its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
