Two housekeepers, Kelvin Agu and Cecilia Usman, on Monday appeared before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing 6,000 dollars belonging to their employer’s friend.
The defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy and theft.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Ms Fatima Ahmed of No. 541 Apartment, Wuye, Abuja, reported the matter at the Wuye Police Station on April 30.
Nwachukwu alleged that the defendants stole the money from their employer’s handbag while cleaning her bedroom.
She told the court that during police investigation, the defendants allegedly made confessional statements admitting to the offence.
The prosecutor further said that all efforts made to recover the money proved abortive.
According to her, the offence contravenes Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The Chief Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Jobbo ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide reliable means of identification.
The case was adjourned until June 29 for hearing.
