The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) on Thursday organised a one-day digital skills training for young women and girls in Kano, aimed at enhancing their capacity in e-commerce and other emerging digital technologies.
The training, which took place at CITAD’s office in Kano, was supported by Qualcomm in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), GSMA, E4.org, Her Digital Skills, and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
CITAD’s Technical Officer, Mr. Muhammad Bello Yahaya, said the training was designed to give participants practical knowledge in digital entrepreneurship and management of online businesses.
“We want young women and girls to see technology as a tool for empowerment. The knowledge they acquire here can help them create better livelihoods and participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” Yahaya said.
He commended Qualcomm and other partners for supporting the initiative, noting that CITAD remains committed to bridging the digital gender gap in Northern Nigeria.
One of the facilitators, Mr. Yusuf Babagana, a data analyst, lauded the participants for their enthusiasm and quick understanding of digital concepts.
“Some of the girls already had advanced knowledge of digital tools, so it was easy to guide them through using artificial intelligence applications,” Babagana said, adding that a mentorship group was created on WhatsApp to provide continuous learning support.
Vice President of International Government Affairs at Qualcomm, Mrs. Elizabeth Migwala, urged participants to embrace opportunities in technology and innovation as they venture into web development and other ICT fields.
She described the workshop as a significant step toward unlocking the potential of women and girls in digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
CITAD said the initiative forms part of its broader effort to promote digital inclusion and women’s economic empowerment through technology-driven opportunities.
