Housewife ‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌drags husband to court, seeks divorce over lack of care

A housewife, Aisha Abdullahi on Wednesday dragged her husband, Salisu Muhammad, before an Upper Sharia Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, seeking divorce over lack of care.

The petitioner had approached the court seeking dissolution of the marriage, offering to return half of the bride price paid by her husband.

The petitioner, through her counsel, Abdullahi Sha’aibu-Fagge, told the court that she was willing to return N50,000, representing half of the N100,000 bride price paid to her by her husband, to secure dissolution of the marriage.

“The petitioner no longer loved her husband and wanted the marriage, which was contracted over a year ago, dissolved” he said

He said the couple had a child together.

When the court asked about the petitioner’s absence, Shuaibu-Fagge said she was at home receiving treatment after allegedly being beaten by her husband’s relatives.

He said the incident caused the stitches from an operation the petitioner underwent during childbirth to reopen, making it difficult for her to attend the court sitting.

The respondent, Muhammad, told the court that he will not divorce his wife, until she pays him N10 million as compensation to enable him marry another wife.

He also demanded an additional N500,000, which he said he spent on her wedding clothes.

The petitioner’s counsel rejected the additional demand, arguing that his client had already given birth to a child for the respondent.

The presiding judge, Malam Halhalatul Kuza’i-Zakariyya, ordered the respondent to submit a written breakdown of the expenses for their marriage at the next sitting.

He adjourned the matter until Nov. 10, for continuation of hearing.
