The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) held a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Bread Bakers Association, the Singa Market Association, and other relevant stakeholders to address consumer complaints and find a lasting solution.
The meeting aimed to address consumer concerns following a recent public outcry over the persistent hike in the prices of bread, gurasa, and other food commodities, despite the reduction in the cost of flour and other ingredients in the market.
This is contained in a statement by the KSCPC Public Relations Officer, Hassan Mukhtar-Abubakar, in Kano.
He quoted the council’s Chairman, Dr. Umar Garba, as saying that since assuming office, the council has received numerous complaints regarding the instability of bakery product prices across the state.
Garba urged the associations to take necessary steps to stabilize prices and support the council’s efforts in ensuring fair pricing for consumers.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the Amalgamated Singa Market, Barrister Junaidu Zakari, confirmed that the price of flour had dropped in the market.
He called on bakery owners to adjust their prices accordingly to reflect this decrease and provide relief to consumers.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Bakers Association, Kano State branch, Alhaji Jibril Abubakar Hamza, highlighted the reasons behind the price instability of bakery products across the state and the country at large, which he said were caused by fluctuations in the prices of ingredients.
Hamza assured the council that, in response to the recent decrease in flour prices, the association had already urged its members to improve the quality of their bread, particularly by increasing its quantity and weight.
The meeting concluded with an agreement that the association would conduct further consultations and take necessary steps to reduce the prices of their products as soon as possible.
The meeting was attended by the Executive Secretary of KSCPC, representatives from the three senatorial districts, the legal advisor, and delegates from various ministries and agencies.
