To address the digital divide and support gender inclusion in Northern Nigeria, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has launched an eight-week coding program, the “Ta’iya Coding Training Program,” for 25 young participants in Kano State.
The program began on Tuesday at Kano CITAD’s head office aims to help youths in Northern Nigeria, especially women, become active in the digital economy, contributing to growth and innovation in the tech sector.
At the opening ceremony, CITAD’s Executive Director, Engr. Y.Z. Ya’u, highlighted the need for this training to help Northern Nigeria keep pace with the digital world.
“This training aims to bridge the gap, especially in women’s inclusion,” he noted, explaining that sectors like education, health, and agriculture in the region lack platforms to showcase emerging digital talent.
Engr. Ya’u was represented by Mal. Adamu Haruna Hadejia, Coordinator for CITAD’s School of Community Network.
Hajiya Aisha Ademola Aminu, Country Director of New Faces, New Voices, urged participants to stay committed to the training, stressing the importance of preparing for the global digital economy.
“By the end of this program, you will be equipped to navigate digital platforms and compete in today’s tech-driven world,” she said.
Facilitator Harira Wakili discussed the program’s role in helping women overcome technophobia and gain skills in software and website design.
“We envision that in the next 4-5 years, Northern Nigeria can contribute 5,000 women to the nation’s ICT sector,” Wakili shared.
Isa Garba, another representative, spoke about CITAD’s commitment to challenging stereotypes that associate technology with men.
“With youths engaged in the digital economy, we can drive meaningful change,” he said, adding his optimism that Northern Nigeria will play a vital role in the tech industry, with women leading the way.
Upon completing the Ta’iya Coding Training Program, participants will have opportunities to join hackathons and digital projects, creating pathways for remote work and tech-focused jobs.
